Gilbert Quélennec, L’état avant le nom
Sortir, tomber, recommencer
Gilbert Quélennec, The state Before the Name
Leaving, Falling, Beginning Again
A movement passes through a body.
It has no name. It returns.
Nothing explains it. Nothing prepares for it.
It breaks off. It begins again.
What happens has no identifiable cause.
It happens, and that is enough to know that it has happened.
The body remains still.
Something else, unnamed, begins to move.
There is nothing to interpret here.
Only a state, recognised when it returns.
Someone recounts what they have lived through.
The narrative stands on its own, without needing to prove itself.
An experience becomes a word.
The word becomes an explanation, accepted before it is questioned.
No one asks how.
Only: does it continue?
What is lived does not coincide with what is said.
And yet it is the same thing that persists.
To recount, here, is not to convince.
It points in a direction, without seeking to justify itself.
First, nothing. Then something becomes audible.
Not yet music. Not yet meaning.
Only a signal, received before it is understood.
This signal requires no analysis.
It touches, or it does not. That is all.
What comes has no need of ornament, no need of justification.
The sound continues without the instruments we know.
It does not seek to resemble what already exists.
What comes to be composed later never matches that first encounter.
This is not a failure. It belongs to another scale.
The noise of the world covers this signal.
Silence does not add to it; it simply allows it to appear.
A sound arising somewhere within the body
produces an effect immediately, without anyone being able to say why.
What returns, in the end, is not a conclusion.
It is a very simple word, repeated,
that no longer seeks to become anything other than what it is
