que l'eau charge l'air, que le vent le fait tourner ;
continuent d'enregistrer,
muets devant ce qu'ils avaient vu venir
sans pouvoir en mesurer la fureur.
Gilbert Quélennec, The Invisible Breath
First, a reserve of heat beneath the sky,
and the water a sea releases
into the scorched air of summer —
a sea breathing
like a body too full.
From the west, a cooler breath slides in.
The sky draws tight between them,
and in that unstable border
something is already seeking its shape.
The wind below does not speak
the language of the wind above.
A difference almost invisible —
the sky learns to turn,
slowly, like a body hesitating
before the first step of a dance.
In the heart of the storm, a mesocyclone begins to live.
On the radar screen, a hook appears —
the faint sign of a force
our eyes cannot yet read.
Heat, moisture, cold, rotation —
everything meets, everything knots together:
the supercell draws inward,
the rotation deepens,
and suddenly a column descends.
Nothing announced it as a certainty.
The meteorologists sensed the threat
within the equations, measured the instability,
knew the stage was set —
but no one knew how powerful the vortex would become.
Science knows that heat feeds it,
that water charges the air, that wind sets it turning;
it does not know where the sky will choose to let go.
Perhaps this is its vertigo:
to be born of laws we understand,
in a moment we cannot wholly foresee.
The sky is not magic. It obeys.
But sometimes obedience itself
takes the shape of a fury.
And for a few minutes,
the invisible becomes a wall,
the rotation becomes a column,
the sky descends to touch the earth —
and the instruments, at its feet,
go on recording,
mute before what they had seen coming,
unable to measure its fury.
