Gilbert Quélennec, Les portes du verre
Gilbert Quélennec, The Doors of Glass
On the red plate, a star that does not exist,
a gleam that had strayed into the glass,
the glass tower was still keeping watch,
before the rockets, before men in space,
when the sky had not yet learnt
to let itself be conquered.
Who, then, was passing there?
Thousands of small absences,
fires without a home,
dust of the night
or messages whose language
no one knew.
A faceless watch bent its eye upon them,
separating the murmur from the silence,
searching in the dark
for the shape of something
that might have wished to speak.
In the shadow of the great blue body,
the gleams withdrew,
as the night descended.
Polished objects,
small faceless travellers,
they still carried
upon their cold skin
a dust of sun.
And when, far away,
the hidden fire of man burst in the desert,
something changed in the night.
That night,
the points rose,
more numerous,
more errant,
as though the Earth's flash
had crossed the night
and found an answer
in some depth
that awaited no one.
Then doubt withdrew,
not like a beast,
but like a shadow
whose wall was slowly disappearing.
It was not the dust.
It was not the scratch.
It was not the grain of silver
that still trembled
in its old sleep.
But what was it?
A balloon lost in the cold,
an eye without memory
turning up there,
or the remnant of a phenomenon
that watched us from an age
when our eyes were not yet open.
Knowledge shrugged its shoulders.
It put forward a name,
then took it back.
It opened a door,
found another door
behind it,
and listened.
We remained there,
before that grey enigma,
without proof,
without oblivion,
descending slowly
towards what, on the ancient glass,
had shone without a word.
A small flame
that had remained there
without asking
to be seen,
and no one, since,
had been able to say
what it had illuminated.
