Gilbert Quélennec, Interconnected
There may be physical worlds linked to ours — not through the stories we invent, but through the very structure of reality.
Our visible Universe may be only a clearing in a forest we cannot see: one world among other worlds, one story among other stories.
Several kinds of proximity exist. They are not alike.
Spatial proximity first — lands that have been turning for ages without ever having known our light, separated from us by light-years that light itself takes time to cross.
Then proximity of density. A world beside ours, not far away in space, but separated by a regime of density that escapes our perception. Two rivers can flow through the same mountain without ever meeting at the surface.
There is also quantum proximity: histories born from the same beginning, subsequently separated by a silent bifurcation. What was possible does not disappear. It becomes another story, continuing without knowing what becomes of the other.
And then there is a deeper proximity, almost prior to the others — not another place, but what precedes place itself. A medium that is not yet space, but already carries its promise — like water that has not yet chosen its bed. Worlds of which we do not even know whether they are worlds, closer to what gives rise to space than to space itself. The source is deeper than the stream it gives rise to.
A single family. Several geometries.
Interconnection may not be a word, first of all, but a kinship. A common constraint. A correlation that no apparent distance can erase.
Real coupling does not need intrusion. It has its conditions, its thresholds, its channels. No channel, no communication. With a channel, in principle, a possible trace.
Some of these proximities do not remain ideas. They are told about, they are lived. Worlds that have known a history close to ours, strata slightly higher, slightly closer to that which creates everything. Not above us as one dominates — above us as a source is above the stream.
There, the channel has a name. It is not forced, it is not summoned: it is called from within.
What comes by intrusion is never them. Those who sought to take found nothing — worlds do not give themselves to those who conquer them. They give themselves, perhaps, to those who know how to inhabit their own.
And yet linked — interconnected, interdependent. Co-evolution would not be an earthly privilege, but a possible property of any system in which several forms of complexity meet. Wherever two worlds touch, something begins.
If the coupling exists, a change here could leave a trace there. Some links are not visited just once: they return, like a season. What departs has not departed for ever — only for as long as the winter on the other side lasts. And a change there could pass through us without our knowing — the trembling of a leaf when a movement passes through a forest we cannot see.
Two gardens. Not two gardens set upon the same earth: two gardens arising from the same soil. One visible, the other hidden. One ancient. The other young. Separated not by distance, but by what we do not yet know how to measure.
A garden is not forced; it is cultivated. A good gardener lets the garden grow at its own pace, without imposing their own technique upon it. They return to it, become attached to it, and draw something from it in return. The gardener does not cultivate only one plant. There are species in this garden that we have not yet named, creatures we believe to be wild that may be wild only in our eyes.
Earth would not be the centre of a cosmic network. An occurrence, one branch among others. And yet someone returns to this particular garden.
They are not above us. They are with us — a little further away in a geometry, a little higher in density, or simply beside us. Never separate.
If these worlds exist, if they are genuinely coupled to ours, their existence should not remain merely something that can be told about.
One day, it should be detectable: an anomaly, an unexpected correlation, a trace in what we already know how to measure — or in what we do not yet know how to look for.
The true mystery may not be whether other worlds exist. It may be how many worlds we have already passed through without understanding that they were there.
To be interconnected does not mean that everything touches everything else — nothing that exists exists alone.
